Garden Surprise

Because its been so dry, I eventually gave up on watering the watermelon and cantaloupe and winter squash. Frequent soakings - even using a soaker hose for hours on end - just couldn't keep up with the drying winds and 100+ heat indexes for weeks on end.  We had one cantaloupe a couple of weeks ago, but that was it. There've been a few smatterings of rain here and there, but nothing that took the plants from a wilty pale green and crispy brown, to vibrant healthy-looking plants with plenty of fruit. I knew there was one small unevenly-shaped watermelon that I'd seen a couple of weeks ago, so, just-for-the-heck-of-it, I decided to go check it out after dinner tonight to see if it had turned into something edible.  To my surprise, in addition to the oddly-shaped one, there were two perfectly sized other watermelon, that I hadn't even known existed! We cut into one of them and it was perfect inside! Sweet and juicy! What a delightful garden surprise that was - a perfect dessert - as we endure yet another week of too many 90+ degree, hot and dry days.
