New Kids In Town

We have expanded our breeding program. We will now also have longwool fleece for sale. We have invested in a starter flock of Romney sheep.  We already have one ewe, Maia, that we got last year.  We now  have two more ewes, Nadia and Nora, and a ram, Nigel.  All of our ewes are traditional white, but are color carriers.  The ram, Nigel, is actually a very interesting grey/white/bleached brown-looking tips color.  I am excited to see what his fleece will look like.  Since these three new ones are so young, we won't be doing any breeding this year.  We have added the Romneys so we have more variety of fleeces to offer. The fleece of the Romney breed is lustrous and hangs in separate locks, with minimal cross fibers between the locks. It is also high yielding and easily spun. Uniformity of crimp from the butt to the tip of a lock is also typical of the breed. Romney wool has the finest fiber diameter of all the longwool breeds; the spinning count may run from 40 to 48. In contrast, a typical Romeldale spinning count is 65-80, so a much finer lock.

Although I won't be breeding the new Romneys this season, I am going to do something that is very taboo in some circles, however.  I am going to breed Maia to a moorit Romeldale CVM ram.  I'm thinking it could produce a nice medium fleece.  We shall see.

We also have a young moorit Romeldale CVM ram that we are borrowing, Notch.  The plan is to breed most of the Romeldale girls to him.  As beautiful as the lambs are out of Korinth, we have become limited in our ability to sell starter flocks, as well as our breeding choices.  I am looking forward to seeing what Notch produces with our present group of ewes.

We are happy to have these new kids added to our present and ever-growing flock and look forward to having more variety to offer to our fleece buyers.
