Cool nights and mornings.

Despite my dread of approaching winter - and the shorter hours of daylight, I LOVE the cool nights and crisp mornings we've been having. Its 6:30 a.m., the sun still not fully up, and I have windows wide open all over the house.  I think it was 59 degrees overnight. The goldfinch are busy filling up on black oil seeds just outside the dining room window. Its been a busy couple of weeks.  More fencing got done (and more planned with my sister Judy in another week).  My grandsons, Emry and Brayden, helped Ada and me clean out the old chicken coop in the backyard (to become a playhouse/storage shed), clean out the old tack room (to become the goat milking room) and put windows in the nka playhouse/storage shed. The to-do list is long, but manageable I think.
On Wednesday, Sugar delivered a pair goat kids - two adorable little boys.  Ada is calling the solid brown one Mocha, and the Toggenburg marked one, Spice.  Most of the broody hens are back to laying eggs on a daily basis, and the new banty hens are finally producing.  In about 10-days the broiler chicks should be here - I considered taking a year off, but the thought of having to buy commercially raised chicken changed my mind.  I only feed our birds, what I would eat myself so the extra work should be worth it.  They grow fast - by the middle of November, they will hopefully all be in our freezer.  A beautiful August morning at Sunny Silver Maple Farm.
