The Secret Life of Horses.
So anyway ... this week we moved the horses to the front pasture because there's so much more to eat up there... it seemed like a great idea at first - Yuri got the back pasture to himself and the horses had tons of green to eat. Sounds like a great thing, doesn't it? Well, it lasted for 2 1/2 days. The horses chased the sheep and goats. If I put some hay out in three separate locations (more minerals in alfalfa hay), the horses went from pile to pile to pile to try to eat it all - and Commander peed on whatever he could reach (he has amazing aim when he puts his mind to it). Despite the very plush pasture, Commander also thought he still had to lean against the east fence to stretch and reach for Fred's corn - planted about 2 feet closer to the fence than last year. Then, when I went over to check everyone later, four goat kids were in the back with Yuri (too young to get bred I hope!) and the horses were standing in the corner longingly eyeing their old pasture. :| So I put them back and re-secured the fence between the two spaces. I guess they missed their favorite old shed in the far northeast corner and the shade of the big old silver maple on these dog days of summer we've been having. It seems they don't mind having to eat hay as long as they get to be where they want to be. Sigh. Such is the lazy life of my two horses.
